Because these were among the early mass-produced butane lighters, they used a proprietary "drop-in" refill system that is now largely obsolete, making them a challenge to maintain today.
Fuel and RefillingThe original Bentley design used a pre-filled, pressurized fuel cell that you would simply swap out.
Since these are no longer manufactured, you have two main options:Adapters: Many standard butane cans include a cap with various plastic tips.
Some users have success using a specific tip (often the blue or universal variety) to press-fill the lighter, though it can be prone to leaking if the seal isn't perfect.Direct Valve Filling:
If your model has a visible fill valve on the bottom, you must purge it first. Use a small tool to press the valve until the hissing stops to remove trapped air, which prevents it from taking a full charge.
Mechanical MaintenanceFlint Replacement: Most Bentley models feature a replaceable flint. If the wheel turns freely without a spark, the flint is likely spent or jammed.
You can typically access the flint chamber by unscrewing a small screw on the bottom or side, depending on the specific model (such as the "Flick" or the Pipe Lighter).
Flame Adjustment:
The flame height is usually controlled by a screw or wheel near the top or on the bottom.
If the lighter hisses but won't catch, try turning the adjuster toward the "+" sign to increase gas flow.Cleaning: Use a Q-tip with a small amount of rubbing alcohol to clean the "chimney" area and the flint wheel to ensure a strong spark and clear gas path.
